At the beginning of the year, we posted about predictions for the next big things in the food world. The pundits said that black currant, pandan, cabbage, "swicy" (sweet/spicy), twists on tiramisu, guava, black sesame, and celery in desserts would be trending. So have any of these panned out? Let's find out from Taste of Home's perspective, as they recently posted about the top 12 food trends they've been noticing this year.

The answer to the question of whether these predictions gained traction seems to be a resounding "no". The number one trend mentioned by Taste of Home was bananas, as desserts and drinks containing the fruit are seemingly everywhere. Fibermaxxing, dirty sodas, "functional" beverages, prickly pear cactis, and sour candies were other top trends. Dot cakes were dubbed the "cutest" trend of the year.
One thing that did seem to match up to predictions (that I saw online but which didn't make it into our January article) was the rise of upscale Jell-O shots. I have not seen this personally, but I won't argue with what everyone is saying on social media. Maybe the success of That Midwestern Mom and her "Minnesota salads that aren't really salads" provided fuel for this trend. I'm sure she is personally responsible for any uptick in the sales of Jell-O over the past couple of years.
