When The Good Housekeeping Illustrated Cookbook was first published in 1980, it was a tremendous success - so successful that it was updated and reissued twice (in 1988 and 2001). All together these cookbooks have sold well over a million copies. A lot has changed in the food world since the first copy hit bookstore shelves, even since the last edition was printed. All of those books predate the rise of blogs and social media, when the landscape for home cooking was quite different.

That's exactly why Good Housekeeping is rereleasing the original 1980 edition of the cookbook today: the editors think that nostalgia for a simpler time is running high, and this book will deliver what people are craving. "Right now, we're seeing home cooks embrace everything from vintage recipes to nostalgic dinner-party menus, but they're also returning to the dishes that have stood the test of time—not just the latest trend making the rounds on social media," says Good Housekeeping senior food editor Susan Choung.
This release faithfully reproduces the look and feel of the original edition, truly a throwback to a different time (shoulder pads not included). Choung describes the book as an "analog antidote to the algorithm," and thinks people will be drawn to the timeless recipes inside. She points to recipes like Banana Cream Pie as items that don't feel dated, just delicious. Examples of other recipes you'll find inside are Curried tuna in choux pastry puffs, watercress–cream cheese triangles, Beef Bourguignon, and Chicken with orange peel Szechuan style. The Good Housekeeping Illustrated Cookbook officially hits store shelves on September 22, but it is available for pre-order on Amazon now. Will you be getting a copy?
