I can't believe I neglected to inform you that today was National Taco Day, which coincided with Taco Tuesday. I will make up for this glaring oversight by alerting you in advance about another great food "holiday" coming on October 8 - National Pierogi Day. This is a relatively new holiday, starting in 2008 and promoted by the grocery-store pierogi brand Mrs. T’s Pierogies. National Pierogi Day “recognizes the day in 1952 when Mrs. T's Pierogies founder Ted Twardzik Sr., the son of the Mrs. T, made his very first pierogi sale to his local grocery store in Shenandoah, PA.”

Pierogi with cheese and potatoes (Pierogi Ruskie) from Wild Honey and Rye: Modern Polish Recipes by Ren Behan

According to the National Day Calendar, pierogi is the plural of a word that means "little ears." Closely associated with the country of Poland, pierogi were popularized in the United States by waves of Central and Eastern European immigrants who came to the country in the latter part of the 19th century. What's not to love about plump pillows stuffed with delicious fillings? The most popular pierogi contain potatoes and cheese, but there are all manner of pierogi fillings, including some sweet ones.

The Food Network article linked in the first paragraph provides a list of celebrations and special deals happening on National Pierogi Day, with Ohio, Pennsylvania, Illinois, and Michigan hosting most of the events. If nothing on that list is near you, check with your local Polish restaurants which may be offering specials in honor of the day. Mrs. T's Pierogies has a contest to win a Pierogi and Sour Cream Halloween couples costume, and there are special deals on their products in many supermarkets such as Kroger, Giant Eagle, and Publix.
